Technique of the week · Mastering delivery
Vocal Variety
Pace, pitch, volume — and contrast
Monotone isn't a voice problem, it's a contrast problem.
The idea
The audience follows change. A voice that varies in speed, pitch and volume signals what matters. You don't need to be louder overall — you need difference: slow down for the key line, drop the volume for the secret, lift the energy for the turn.
How to do it
- Mark one sentence to slow down, one to speed up, one to say quietly.
- Land the last word of each sentence; don't let it fade.
- Record 30 seconds on your phone and listen without the video.
In the session
The drill
Same sentence, five emotions: everyone says one line as excited, secretive, angry, amused, sad. Then deliver a short talk using two of them.
This week
Your homework
Read one paragraph out loud tonight as if telling a child a story.
When you give feedback, ask
Where did their voice change? Did the change match the meaning?
